During a routine mobile dental visit to a residential home in Wicklow, one resident mentioned a sore patch under his tongue that "just wouldn't go away". It had been there about three months.
On examination the area looked suspicious. We completed a full oral cancer screening and advised urgent referral to a specialist service. Because we could assess him on site, there was no delay.
Thankfully it was caught early. The lesion was treated and the prognosis was very good. The family contacted us afterwards to say they were grateful it was picked up when it was.
This is why routine mobile assessments matter. Many older patients simply don't report symptoms unless somebody asks them directly.
