Oral Cancer Screening During Routine Visit – Early Detection

During a routine mobile dental visit to a residential home in Wicklow, one resident mentioned a sore patch under his tongue that “just wouldn’t go away”. It had been there about 3 months.

We had scheduled the visit a week prior.

On examination, the area looked suspicious. We completed a full oral cancer screening and advised urgent referral to a specialist service. Because we were able to assess him on site, there was no delay.

Thankfully, it was caught early. The lesion was treated and prognosis was very good. The family later contacted us to say they were grateful it was picked up when it was.

This is why routine mobile assessments matter. Many elderly patients simply don’t report symptoms unless asked directly.

Family Testimonial

“We honestly thought it was nothing serious. If you hadn’t checked it that day it probably would have been left much longer. We’re very grateful it was found early.”
